water

I’m a Water Baby!  Water is where I shared wonderful moments at the neighborhood pool with my dad as he helped me master walking and swimming at the same time. I have subtle glimpses of these tender moments but, with distinct clarity, I felt the water drops call to me even then.  In summers to follow, I dove in the pool at first light for swim practice and pulled myself out of the water for dinner or the streetlights turning on. Training in the water was two-a-days, year-round, summer league, winter high school league and winter county league practices plus swim meets on the weekends. Lifeguarding from high school through college allowed me to be at the pool even longer and get paid. A knee injury during dryland training ended my competitive swimming career in college, see, I was meant to be in the water! Despite the abrupt end, life in the water has gifted me with neighbors, friends and teammates, that became family.

It all began with my Dad passing his love of the water on to me and since then, water has been one of the loves of my life. I’ve made my home on the coast through the years, St. Augustine, Florida, Savannah, Georgia, & North Carolina’s Outer Banks to be closer to water. The rhythms of the ocean call to me like the first drops did all those years ago.  Water continues to energize me, inspire me, open my mind to the possibilities and water always feels like a strong, powerful embrace.

Air

Do you smell the snow or the rain coming? Do you feel the difference in the air as the seasons start to shift?

As you drive close to the coast, do you open all the windows to capture the salt air blowing in?

I love feeling the energy move through the air, admiring the colors of a new season, sitting and watching the clouds roll…  all while enveloped in the legacy of places I’ve lived or loved.  Burning native, sustained and cultivated, sage and palo santo in my home, placing bottle trees in the garden and painting ceilings haint blue are a few I practice. These refreshing and deep traditions set new ideas and perspectives adrift in the air.  They cleanse, protect, motivate, and invoke dreams of a new dawn.  The smell and smoke in the air is a captivating and ethereal brew. I often gaze at the light through the colorful bottles in my trees as they cleanse the spirits using the moon and the sun.  The sky is brought down to me inside and outside with my haint blue ceilings.  I can’t help but feel the new vibes that blow in with the breeze.

Fire

If you chat with my friends, you’ll eventually hear rumors about lightning and I…when storms brew on the horizon, thunder booms in the distance, dark skies loom, winds race… the energy, the unexpected, the uncontrollable fast approaching…they with nervous and electric excitement may tell me to leave their house.

Almost every home I’ve ever lived in has been struck by lightning with me in it at least once. I stopped counting after 10 strikes, but my insurance company could probably tell you the exact number.  The first, my childhood home, my late teens, the bolt come through the window above my head, crossed our rec room and cooked the TV.  My parents sat in the car in front of our house waiting for the storm to pass so Mom’s hair would be ok after a visit to the beauty parlor. They finally joined the party when the firetrucks arrived. I’m thankful to report there were no fires or structural damage, only electronic damage each time.

I’m the constant in these events. Is this a special attraction Mother Nature feels for me? Is she trying to get a metaphoric fire ignited?  Perhaps she’s trying to remind me of the creative spark deep inside. I’m listening now, finally running free with a creative freedom I haven’t experienced in a long time.  Hopefully this new chapter will be easier on my electronics.

Earth

Running the woods, building forts in the thickets, enjoying mulberries off the bushes, chasing crayfish in the streams, counting lightning bugs, collecting rocks and crystals…these were my early practices in mother nature’s embrace. She nurtured me and planted stable roots that help me to this day.  I’m grateful for these experiences and appreciate cultures that put mother nature first. I sprinkle healing crystals around my home and studio to help elevate and move me.  You’ll often see me in handmade Native American turquoise jewelry. With each piece, I can feel the flow from the southwest desert, the artisan, the stones, the patterned metalwork… rich with earthly intrinsics.

A Navajo (Dine’) language specialist in Arizona graciously helped me in my thesis research and inspired the name of my thesis and show in 1997.  He recounted his people’s symbiotic relationship with the earth and an ancient blessing that is used on a home and its residents asking the earth’s 4 elements for protection.  “A Painted House” was the resulting work/title for my thesis. I seek now, to expand upon this early creative work, build community connections and initiate new creative havens with my earthbound art and surface designs.
